A common question I get is:
How do I make journaling stick?
When people ask, they've usually tried several times. They've experimented with gratitude, free writing, or just an end-of-day reflection.
I struggle with the same thing.
I've always believed in the value of journaling. Reflection is a critical piece of learning (some studies suggest it's the key to achieving learning goals and self-regulation, both of which are integral to mastery and peak performance). But I've never been able to find a practice that resonates for me.
Until I started journaling with Claude.
I've since recommended this practice to several clients, and the stickiness factor is astounding. Not only does it make journaling more interesting, but it makes it more powerful. Claude is both a sounding board and a synthesizer.
For example, you can ask Claude to provide you feedback about yourself, or to suggest non-obvious ways to improve. When I did that, it told me I tend to be limited in my creative thinking ability when I am solving problems related to my family. Instead, I focus on big, wholesale changes that might be too extreme or unnecessary.
This was a pretty profound insight.
And it was right.
After just 30 days, Claude could suggest meaningful ways I could get better in my relationships. That's pretty cool. And the people I work with have found the same.
So if you struggle with journaling, here's what I'd suggest:
1. Use Claude itself to design instructions for the Claude "project" you will use for your journal.
2. Then, create a new project and upload the instructions.
3. Start a new chat and journal with Claude each day for 30 days.
In a month, ask it for feedback. You'll learn even more than you would just journaling on your own.
So you can see what's possible, here are the instructions for my Claude project.
You're welcome to copy and paste this if you think it would work for you, too.
In addition to these instructions, I've also uploaded a few books it can use to draw on for suggestions.
Here are the instructions:
